That plan eventually fell into disrepair (“Who wants to hear a double album right now?” he recently told Corbin Reiff’s Sonic Breadcrumbs newsletter) but a sense of its scope remains in songs that conjure endless miles of open road, the sun racing towards the horizon, and Laurel Canyon jams on the radio. Way back at the start, while touring Yolk in the Fur in 2018, Ross was toying with the idea of making a double album based around the American west, with all of the open skies, empty plains and complex history that entails. That’s probably my go to when I’m just sitting down on the couch and zoning out.” As far as acoustic goes I have a nylon Alhambra, nothing nice but a cool, vibey classical guitar. It’s pretty much stock and a total workhorse. I put a Mastery bridge on it and that’s about it. “My guitar that I take on tour, my go to electric, is a J Mascis Jazzmaster. “I lean pretty heavily on a handful of synthesizers,” he says. Gear-wise, Ross also tends to view a small group of trusted advisors as the way forward rather than spending time getting lost in a crowd of instruments. Pedal steel is my favourite instrument, gun to my head, and he is amazing.” As far as Mike goes, I can’t imagine making a record without him at this point. I definitely wanted the vocals to not sound boring at any point on this record, which was why I was experimenting with a harmonizer and Julia and Dan, he sang quite a bit, just to freshen it up. “After the last record our live show featured more singing and guest vocals,” Ross says. “It’s like Christmas morning when someone plays something great on a song,” he admits. All of a sudden Ross, who writes and arranges every note of the band’s music, is dragged from a state of creative autocracy into having his ideas reinterpreted and built upon as he nominally watches from the sidelines. Brownell and drummer Dan Keegan – are a raft of session players and collaborators, and these outside voices offer a gentle shock to the system. Alongside Wild Pink’s usual rhythm section – bassist T.C. On A Billion Little Lights the cast list has opened up a little bit. But I like to subtly and sneakily make it kinda fucked up and harder for the guys to play, at least.” If you looked at a chord chart, it looks pretty simple. “I shy away from conventional song structures, even though I think these songs are deceptively simple – three or four chords, major keys. I really just like to jam ideas, as many ideas as possible, into a song. It’s way more fun for me to work when it’s like that, coming up with sounds that I haven’t heard before. A big part of that is just layering textures. “There are multiple ideas, but they flow as seamlessly as possible. “More and more that’s what I’m interested in doing, making a little world out of each song,” Ross says. It’s a sunlit wander along streets that might lead you where you need to go. It’s not content with verse-chorus-verse or beginning-middle-end. But repeated investigation revealed hooks that hung in the air and disappeared, getting one shot in the limelight, along with washes of harmonizer and a much, much bigger sense of ambition. On first listen it was an objectively beautiful, synth-heavy indie-pop tune. The LP’s lead single The Shining But Tropical told us an awful lot about where Ross’s head was at during the planning stages. It’s such a valuable working relationship.” “I’d have an idea and he’d know how to execute it. “He totally empowered me to do these things,” Ross says. It’s hugely ambitious but carried off with a sense of bone-deep confidence. A Billion Little Lights is packed with moments of warmth and granular instrumental innovation, alongside skyscraping melodies and rootsy guitar breaks. Helping Ross to bring the LP to life was producer David Greenbaum, whose experiences of recording with U2, Beck and Jenny Lewis equate to a pretty good Wild Pink Venn diagram. When that was done I was like, ‘Oh my God, I just want to keep going with that idea.’ With this record I had a year or two to really drill down into these songs and make them sound as lush as possible.” By the time I did Yolk in the Fur I was able to plan ahead, make things sound bigger, with more and more layers, which was really exciting. “It got me thinking about recording a lot differently. “That’s something that started on the first record, which was my first time making a record in the studio,” he says. It is a meticulously planned, beautifully executed decision to go big or go home. Ross’s new LP, A Billion Little Lights, is the result of two years of writing, demoing and recording. Then an intake of breath, but not a pause. Each of his records has been a refinement, beginning with the gutsy indie-rock of 2017’s self-titled being retrofitted to encompass sweeping heartland rock in time for the following year’s Yolk In The Fur. With Wild Pink, Ross has been zeroing in on this goal for the past five years or so.

Self-employment taxes are probably the most dreaded type of taxes for freelancers, as they can be quite steep. Regular employees normally pay half of the amount for FICA, and their employer provides the other half.īut, as an independent contractor, you pay the entire sum yourself through the SE tax. These taxes include your Social Security and Medicare contributions. You’re subject to the self-employment tax if your net earnings for the year equal or exceed $400. Since you don’t have an employer who can withhold money from your paycheck for FICA (Federal Insurance Contribution Act) taxes, you need to do it yourself. Schedule CĪnother form you need to file with the IRS is Schedule SE - i.e. However, as an independent contractor, you also need to file Schedule C, an addition to Form 1040, detailing all your profit and loss, as well as deductible expenses, as a one-person business during the year. Step #1: Reporting incomeĪs a freelancer, the IRS sees you as a self-employed individual, and you’re subject to different tax rules than employees. Here, we’ll explain each step in greater detail. Tax filing for independent contractors can seem scary to beginners - but it doesn’t have to be difficult. But, they are generally advised to set aside 25% to 30% of their taxable yearly income to pay all their yearly taxes. The exact amount freelancers should pay in taxes varies on a case-by-case basis. So, how much should you set aside for taxes as an independent contractor? Therefore, you’re in charge of reporting your earnings and handling your tax obligations, as there’s no employer to withhold taxes from your income. Difference between a freelancer, a contractor, and an employee How to file taxes as an independent contractor in 4 stepsĪs an independent contractor, you’re self-employed. On the other hand, you’re not an independent contractor if your payer (in this case, your direct employer) has the legal right to control how you do your work - even if you’re generally provided the freedom of action. The latter term stems from the name of a form payers use to report the compensation paid to contractors (which we’ll explain in more detail later). CONS: No server-level monitoring no corrective actions.ĬOMPANY: Dartware(603) 643-2268 - COST: Starts at $295 for 10-node network. PROS: Accurate discovery of devices useful status charts. The network mapping process used SmartScan's hierarchical connectivity data to create separate mapss for each subnet instead of drawing a single map containing all devices.ĬOMPANY: Ipswitch(781) 676-5700 - COST: $695 per server. We were especially keen on WhatsUp Gold's autodiscovery function, called SmartScan, which used router tables to identify our network segments during the monitoring process. Like InterMapper - and unlike the other products we reviewed - WhatsUp Gold monitors the network rather than a particular operating system. WhatsUp Gold has come a long way from its simple beginnings as a freeware download, but it retains its simple and uncluttered nature. You'll need an Internet connection and browser whenever you want to refer to it. Unfortunately, the all-too-brief documentation is entirely online at Dartware's Web site. Each customizable Web page is essentially a server-side script containing HTML statements and variables whose values you can set. By creating templates for the Web pages InterMapper displays, we were able to tailor its appearance to our liking. It presents a typical Macintosh interface that's easy to navigate, and it also offers a Web-based interface with customizable Web pages. InterMapper can also log the data for later export into a database program (such as FileMaker Pro) for further analysis. The overlaid image is termed a "strip chart," and it appears as a floating window linked to the map on which the network device exists. In addition to producing an SNMP-based map of the network, InterMapper can overlay the map with the history of one or more variables, such as switch or router availability. InterMapper can't restart programs, launch repair utilities or update relational databases with SQL. For corrective action, it can cycle power through a PowerKey Pro unit (a remote-control type of power strip) to rather forcefully reboot a Macintosh server. InterMapper can notify administrators of problems through e-mail, pager, AppleEvent or SNMP alert. Based on the hierarchical order in which the devices are discovered, InterMapper creates a map showing their connections. The SNMP requests InterMapper sends out include DNS server, User Datagram Protocol (UDP) Listener, Real Time Streaming Protocol, Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, RADIUS, KeyServer, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, APC Uninterruptible Power Supply, Network Time Protocol (NTP), HTTP Proxy, HTTP Post, 4D Server and FileMaker Pro. Starting at a particular DNS name or IP address, InterMapper uses a combination of SNMP polls, IP pings, AppleTalk echo packets and Domain Name System (DNS) and Name Binding Protocol (NBP) queries to discover network devices. It's appropriate for AppleTalk-based networks consisting entirely or almost entirely of Macintosh computers. If you don't use Windows NT or you're really only interested in network monitoring rather than operating system monitoring, Dartware's InterMapper 3.0 or Ipswitch's WhatsUp Gold 5.0 might be just the ticket.ĭartware's InterMapper is a Macintosh-based tool that monitors a network for device status and availability. It's been three years since IEM Katowice's format was changed to include a RO36 bracket/play-in stage, and I believe that the 2023 edition features the most competitive, closely matched field of players yet. Tier 5: Contending for a Group Stage Spot #34: Armani However, you need to put together three to four of those upsets to escape the RO36, and I just can't see either of these two pulling off that kind of underdog run. Like their regional peers, TeebuL and Coffee could very well win surprise victories that help send a player from a stronger region out of the tournament. As for the OCE #1 seed, Probe managed to eliminate Percival 2-0 in last year's Katowice play-in stage. That's not to say those seeds haven't scored upsets-previous China #2 seed Cyan took down Scarlett at Katowice 2021 and then defeated Has at Katowice 2022. Since the WCS-EPT transition, the #1 seed out of Oceania/Rest of Asia and #2 seed from China have never made it out of the IEM Katowice play-in stage. Unfortunately for TeebuL and Coffee, historic results force me to place them here in Tier 6. Tier 6: Looking for a Series Win #36: TeebuL I fully expect to be surprised by players who had very productive practice leading into Katowice, or those who are bringing effective new strategies to the competition. Thus, I'm leaning hard on previous performances, reputation-and for the lack of a better word- vibes for some of these placements. Also, a large chunk of the players in the competition haven't competed at all in 2023, leaving their form a mystery. A new patch and map pool was implemented in the last two months, and we've seen ZERO high-stakes events in the new setting. While all forms of Power Ranks are speculative, this one might take the cake. I'm not sure if they are simply going to skip the other modes or if similar changes are coming in a future patch, but it would certainly be a welcome addition as the same problems apply in team games as well.IEM Katowice 2023 is nigh! Before we begin, we embark on an ambitious project: Rank all 36 players. At least now I'll be able to play the Zerg without getting absolutely obliterated within minutes!ĭo bear in mind that this will only affect ranked 1v1 matches, the 'serious' competitive mode, while everything else will remain as it is. It may have taken them around 20 years to finally implement this quite obvious change, but I'm still incredibly happy they have done so. We’ve opted to give the Random race option it’s very own ranking as well, since people can identify with being “a random player” and we wanted to preserve the meaning and value behind choosing this race option. This rank is completely unaffected by any games you play as another race option, including ‘Random’. This will ensure that players who played as multiple races prior to this patch can receive accurate rankings for each individual race.Īs you complete your placement matches, you’ll receive a ranking for each of the race options. " When you first login after Patch 3.7 is applied, there will be a new season for which you will need to play five (5) placement matches before being placed for any given race, even if you placed into the ladder with that race during the previous season. If you're wondering how all of this works, here's a brief rundown from Blizzard themselves: Thankfully, Blizzard has finally decided to do something about it! The next Starcraft 2 update (3.7) will essentially separate your MMR (matchmaking rating) by race, so you'll never again need to worry about swapping over to your 'bad' races. No matter which way you go about it, the end result is quite clearly not ideal. As of right now, your options are either to get completely destroyed over and over again until you fall to your proper rating with the Terran race, or to simply never play them on the official ladder which means your skills will improve at a much slower pace, further propagating the problem. While you might be a Diamond Protoss player, your rank rank as a Terran could potentially be somewhere around Gold, purely due to the different mechanics and playstyles the races require. Learning one race takes months and months of dedication, during which you will slowly advance through the ranks and face off against players doing the same, but should you decide to switch to a race you know nearly nothing about. Starcraft 2's matchmaking system is pretty damn good at finding you equally skilled opponents, which is both a blessing and a curse. Spectrum modems are typically very reliable. There are a few different ways to fix this issue. This indicates that there is an error with the connection between the Spectrum modem and the computer. In some cases, the Spectrum modem will display a blue and white light pattern. If it is red or flashing, then the modem is not connected to the internet. The receive and send lights will flash when the modem is transferring data. If it is red or flashing, then the modem is not receiving power. The power light should be green and steady. The first thing that you should do if your Spectrum modem is flashing blue and white is to check the lights on the front panel. Solution #0: Check the Spectrum Modem Lights We will discuss each one in more detail below. It's a pretty great way to try out a fancy, tri-band mesh router with support for Wi-Fi 6 to see what sort of impact it'll make on your home networking speeds. The Spectrum modem has four lights on the front panel: power, receive, send, and online. That means you could rent the Eero Pro 6 from Mediacom for a year and a half and still pay less than you would if you bought it outright. Like with the modem, you can skip that fee by using a router of your own, but this rental is actually a pretty decent deal - the Eero Pro 6 is one of our top-rated mesh routers, and a two-piece setup typically costs well over $200. The fee is another $10 per month, and you'll get a two-piece Eero Pro 6 mesh router. Here's the full list of approved hardware (PDF).īut wait, there's more! If you need a router, Mediacom will rent you one of those, too. You can skip that fee by using your own modem, but it'll need to be at least a DOCSIS 3.0 model (and Mediacom recommends going with a newer DOCSIS 3.1 model). Mediacom is a midsize cable internet provider, and customers need to pay $13 per month to rent a cable modem from the company. Read our CenturyLink home internet review.Įquipment fees: Yes ($13 per month for modem rental, $10 per month for mesh router rental) "Retired and third-party devices are more likely to cause performance issues and may not connect to your internet service correctly."Īnd remember, if you're replacing CenturyLink's gateway with a standard modem, then you'll also need to find a good router to go with it. "CenturyLink highly recommends using one of our certified or recommended Wi-Fi modems (gateways), which have been tested and approved to work optimally with our high-speed internet technology," the company's website reads. You can skip that $15 fee by using a gateway or modem of your own, but CenturyLink cautions customers not to use anything that isn't on its list of approved devices. Depending on the type of plan you sign up for, that gateway will be one of four models: the Actiontec C3000A, the Greenwave C4000, the Zyxel C4000LZ or the Zyxel C3000Z. In some regions, Enhanced Wi-Fi means that you get the Eero Pro 6 mesh router, which is excellent, but in others, it's just the standard Eero 6 router, which wasn't nearly as strong a performer in my tests.Ĭustomers can also rent the Netgear Nighthawk XR1000 Wi-Fi 6 gaming router for $13 per month, which isn't a bad deal at all, given that it usually costs around $300.Įquipment fee: Yes ($15 per month for modem/router gateway device rental)ĬenturyLink charges $15 monthly to rent a gateway that combines a modem and a router into one device. That said, it's worth noting that Astound also offers "Enhanced Wi-Fi" in some regions, which gets you a fancier router for an additional $10 per month. Regardless of the price, the rental fee includes both a modem and a router, and you can skip it by using your own hardware (here's Astound's list of approved modems). In some cases, the rental fee can be included for as low as $3 per month, but in others, you'll need to pay as much as $15 monthly. Equipment fee: Yes ($3 to $15 per month for modem and router rental, depending on region)Īstound Broadband offers home internet service in several large metros across the country - including Austin, Chicago, Houston, New York and Seattle - and the modem and router rental terms vary from region to region and plan to plan. Your Request Originates from an Undeclared Automated Tool Here are my suggestions on some one minute monologues for kids that will show off your actor at their next audition! What is a Dramatic Monologue for Kids?Ī monologue is simply a speech that is given to an imaginary audience of one or more people. In this blog post, I want to make it easy for you and the young actor or actors in your life, whether you’re a parent or arts educator- or perhaps a young actor yourself! Oftentimes, my student is intimidated at all the options out there and just doesn’t know how or where to begin! My students and I have noticed that most audition notices mirror those of a professional adult actor, where you need to prepare and memorize a one minute monologue. Here’s the reality: it’s MUCH more competitive these days for all ages, and that includes kids at the non-professional level as well. I have noticed something has changed as far as audition requirements go, though! Gone are the days when a kid can pretty much just show up to an audition, and do something simple and get cast… because the artistic staff like their personality. More specifically, it’s cool for kids! This has made my life as an acting teacher very enriching and interesting indeed. It seems like all of a sudden theater and acting is “cool”. Professional actors certainly know this, but it is advantageous for those that are active in community theater or school theater, too! Because “I like strong women” is code for “I hate strong women.Monologues are an essential part of a stage actor’s career, and that includes actors from ALL walks of life! It doesn’t matter what sort of actor you are – comedic, dramatic, classical or contemporary…you will need a variety of short funny monologues to have ready if you’re auditioning for acting work. (How do you know you’re not Cool Girl? Because he says things like: “I like strong women.” If he says that to you, he will at some point fuck someone else. There are variations to the window dressing, but believe me, he wants Cool Girl, who is basically the girl who likes every fucking thing he likes and doesn’t ever complain. It may be a slightly different version – maybe he’s a vegetarian, so Cool Girl loves seitan and is great with dogs or maybe he’s a hipster artist, so Cool Girl is a tattooed, bespectacled nerd who loves comics. Oh, and if you’re not a Cool Girl, I beg you not to believe that your man doesn’t want the Cool Girl. I’d want to grab the poor guy by his lapels or messenger bag and say: The bitch doesn’t really love chili dogs that much – no one loves chili dogs that much! And the Cool Girls are even more pathetic: They’re not even pretending to be the woman they want to be, they’re pretending to be the woman a man wants them to be. I used to see men – friends, coworkers, strangers – giddy over these awful pretender women, and I’d want to sit these men down and calmly say: You are not dating a woman, you are dating a woman who has watched too many movies written by socially awkward men who’d like to believe that this kind of woman exists and might kiss them. Maybe they’re fooled because so many women are willing to pretend to be this girl. Go ahead, shit on me, I don’t mind, I’m the Cool Girl. Cool Girls never get angry they only smile in a chagrined, loving manner and let their men do whatever they want. Being the Cool Girl means I am a hot, brilliant, funny woman who adores football, poker, dirty jokes, and burping, who plays video games, drinks cheap beer, loves threesomes and anal sex, and jams hot dogs and hamburgers into her mouth like she’s hosting the world’s biggest culinary gang bang while somehow maintaining a size 2, because Cool Girls are above all hot. Men always say that as the defining compliment, don’t they? She’s a cool girl. |
